Hurried passer-by, enter here as into a sanctuary.
Time is suspended.
The cities, stilled on canvas, reveal their strata: stones, alleys, accumulated lives.
Each painting is a freeze-frame of superimposed centuries.
Like a score engraved on a record, already there in its entirety,
yet discovered one note at a time.
Look.
And savour what humans too often forget to see.

What Remains

Available€4,50060 × 80 cm

Lille is a city of restless destiny. It changed kingdoms the way others merely changed centuries.

Can we, busy French souls, imagine what was happening in our streets fifty years ago — a century, three centuries ago?

It is an enchantment to watch these architectural, artistic and historical strata accumulate, and to be their unwitting actors.

What remains, when history has turned to embers.

The archaeologists of the city of machines do not free ancient Gallic monuments from the earth, for those have vanished. They follow instead the imprints left by absence: the hole of a missing post, the outline of a ditch, the space once occupied by a farm. In negative… We readily imagine history as an accumulation of stones — yet how many civilisations now speak to us only through the voids they left in the landscape?

Millennia — Marion de Gentile

Millennia

Available€3,20060 × 80 cm

The children of Angers race across 6,000 years of history. The castle promontory hides, like its most precious treasures, a monumental Neolithic testimony, the Gaulish presence, the Roman presence. Six millennia of love, initiative and care for a heritage built brushstroke after brushstroke.

Heureux qui comme Ulysse — Marion de Gentile

Heureux qui comme Ulysse

Available€2,80060 × 80 cm

There are towns whose history is as short as our attachment to them is deep. Towns that cradled our childhood, watched us grow, and scatter poetry across the whole of France.

The first canvas of a new series. Athens, two soldiers face to face: exploring the reasons that led to the fall of Greek civilisation, and the role of the Roman Empire in seizing the Greek kingdoms. The transparencies of the Greek soldier speak of a civilisation’s fragility — making the passing of time more visible than ever.
