The strata of history take human form and become civilisations.
Figures embody ancient worlds, their power and their vertigo.
Why do civilisations fall? What remains of their brilliance, and what do they hand down to those who replace them?
To paint these figures is to make the passing of time emerge — visible, almost palpable.

Two soldiers face to face beneath the Acropolis: the reasons that led to the fall of Greek civilisation, and the role of the Roman Empire in seizing the Greek kingdoms.
The transparencies of the Greek soldier speak of a civilisation’s fragility.
Research notebook
A canvas is prepared long before the canvas. Hands, profiles, postures: each element is first studied on its own, in shades of grey, before joining the composition. Between the two soldiers a game is being played — an echo of the dice players of ancient Greek pottery — and its outcome is already written.
The next canvases will be unveiled here, as the studio work unfolds.
